Cruising the Nile

Tuesday morning was very leisurely. We had a late breakfast and met at 10:00 for a felucca ride on the Nile. It was a relaxing ride and Hamada (our guide) talked to us about the differences between the people of north vs. the people in the south. It is similar to a lot of southern countries where the pace is slow and the language is a bit difference and has it’s own dialect.

We got back on our boat and our boat started sailing about 12:30. We had a very relaxing day on the boat enjoying views of the Nile and the lush plants and land along it. We also saw very small villages of people.

We went through a lock at Esna and the highlight here was that there was a guy bargaining and selling goods on his boat while we waited to get through the locks. It was quite hilarious because we are 5 decks up and he would shout up what he had and how much he wanted. Those who were interested shouted back how much they were willing to pay or asked to see the goods. The guy would through the stuff up in plastic bags so we could look at and then we would barter some more. The goods were either thrown back down to the boat or money would be put in the bags and thrown down. I don’t think a description can really capture how funny this was because people were shouting back and forth and the guy below was rushing us because we were about to enter the lock and he needed his money. In the end several people got some deals on scarves and galabayia (the traditional dress worn by Egyptians).
